South Sudan’s Future at Stake: The Threat of Sham Elections and Repression
Wednesday, 20th September, 2023
By Dr. Peter Biar Ajak PhD
As the world’s attention turns this week towards the 78th gathering of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, President Salva Kiir of South Sudan makes an appearance for the first time since 2014. Back then, he had addressed the UNGA less than a year after igniting a devastating civil war in December 2013, which has claimed over 400,000 lives. However, despite international assistance and goodwill, Kiir has failed to demonstrate the necessary political will to make the critical compromises required for enduring peace. Now, nine years later, he returns to the United States to seek support for South Sudan’s repeatedly postponed first-ever elections.
